For Immediate Release –

Egyptian authorities are currently detaining two Canadians, Professor and Filmmaker, John Greyson, and Emergency Physician, Tarek Loubani, 48 hours after their initial arrest.

Egyptian authorities have yet to provide a reason for the ongoing detention of the two Canadians.

3:20pm, Aug 18/13

We have heard from Canadian consular services that they managed to visit Tarek Loubani and John Greyson in the Egyptian prison facility. Tarek and John have both passed messages through consular services that they are okay. We still have no information about charges. Consular services will be seeing Tarek and John again tomorrow.

12:30pm, Aug 18/13

Canadian officials have confirmed to numerous members of the press that they are aware of John and Tarek’s arrests and are providing them with consular services.

There has yet to be any communication with family or friends. We presume this means that consular staff have not yet had direct access to John or Tarek.

Pressure is still needed to get confirmation of their condition and to ensure their release.

We don’t have official confirmation from the Canadian authorities, but we have reason to think that John and Tarek have been located.

We still have no confirmed information about John and Tarek’s whereabouts. We calculate that the best course of action would be for Canadian and US friends to pressure Egyptian embassies and consulates and also Canadian and US foreign affairs offices. Many of these offices will not be open on Sundays, but here is some contact information.

Two Canadians, doctor Tarek Loubani and filmmaker John Greyson, were arrested by Egyptian police yesterday in Cairo. They were en route to the Gaza Strip, where they are working on an academic and medical collaboration between the University of Western Ontario (UWO) and the main hospital in the Gaza Strip, the al-Shifa hospital.
