MEDIA DEMOCRACY DAY WORKSHOP

TORONTO, ON

Organized by OPIRG U of T

Left punditry: doing and presenting political analysis.

This workshop is for the rogue opinionated radical, or (better), the activist with an organization working on some aspect of communication.

The media battle isn’t just one of information, but one of ideas. How can a radical relate to day to day events and come to an analysis of them? What sources to use, and how to read them? And then, how to communicate this understanding? To each other, and to the unconvinced? And to what end? How to relate to movements while doing so? You’ll hear some thoughts on how to do it and how to reach audiences from my experience doing it. Then you will practice presenting some idea – in a sentence, in a paragraph, and, time permitting, at op-ed length (500-800 words). Examples? We might use the financial crisis, the war in Afghanistan, Israeli Apartheid, the fight for housing, indigenous struggles, immigration policy, or something else that might be on your minds!

Justin Podur is a writer/editor at ZNet (www.zmag.org) and a blogger at killingtrain.com. He has worked on communications with several organizations, including CAIA (www.caiaweb.org) and Pueblos en Camino (www.en-camino.org).

  1. Schedule of the day
Hey Justin. Any idea what the schedule for the day will look like? And, is your specific workshop from 2:30-3:30?

    Thank you.

    Mikhail

    1. some idea…
A plenary panel at 9:30, 2 morning blocks of workshops (10:30-11:30 and 11:30-12:30), lunch, then 3 more blocks of workshops (1:30/2:30/3:30) then more plenaries, something at University & College at 5:30, and a keynote panel at 8pm at Steamwhistle Roundhouse, and a concert at 9pm. I don’t know how much of it I’ll be at, but my workshop will be at 2:30. See you there!
