Uribe kills another chance at peace…

So the other day the President of Colombia, Alvaro Uribe Velez, killed the humanitarian accord negotiations that the President of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez Frias, was trying to negotiate. You can read earlier entries in this blog for the details – some of FARC’s kidnapped prisoners in exchange for many of the guerrilla prisoners of the Colombian state, and a demilitarized zone. It would have been a start, but you can see from my previous blog entries that I was very doubtful that it would happen. Well, it didn’t, and Uribe decided to kill it in a very filthy way.

Take Uribe’s speech: “We need mediators against terrorism, not to justify terrorism”. Basically accusing Chavez of terrorism. “Your words, your attitudes, give the impression that you are not interested in peace in Colombia but that Colombia be a victim of FARC terrorism.” It is one of the ugliest political speeches I have ever heard, actually, and I’ve heard a few.

Chavez, who had been diplomatic with Uribe for years (some of which is covered in this blog) had the chance to answer. “Colombia deserves a better president, one with dignity”. He said he would be “putting relations with Colombia in the freezer.” He talked about how far the negotiations had actually gone, when Uribe killed them.

The strangest thing about Uribe’s behavior is that he behaves as if he hadn’t agreed to the talks or invited Chavez to mediate the process to begin with, as if any of it could have happened without his agreement. Now he accuses Chavez of interference. Chavez said he was “ashamed”, that Uribe was “lying, openly and in an ugly way”. He said he would not break relations with Colombia, even though Uribe wanted to, he would not be the one to do it. He noted how he had risked his own life: “Imagine me, on a mountain in Colombia, there where the gringos are running around…” he had warned that there would be many to sabotage the process.

But what a dirty sabotage, and so insulting to everyone involved, so contemptuous. A very sad and predictable end to an anomalous negotiation.

Estas fueron sus declaraciones de esta tarde, durante una alocución en Táchira.
Las relaciones con Colombia las meto en un congelador porque perdí confianza. Esto que hicieron es un verdadero escupitazo y como ellos siguen mintiendo, yo estoy obligado a decir mis verdades.

Ya teníamos una fórmula para lograr el acuerdo humanitario, estoy muy seguro que lo íbamos a lograr. Además, teníamos medio mundo apoyándonos. Y de repente, sin una llamada; lo digo claro porque usted no da la cara, manda a que otros hablen por usted.

Para que ustedes vean lo grave de esto y la falta de respeto del presidente Uribe, ahora si así trata a otro jefe de Estado me imagino lo demás señor Presidente, se lo digo claro porque usted no da la cara, manda a que hablen por usted, o saca papeles. Yo no, yo doy la cara, mi vergüenza, yo tengo vergüenza. El presidente Uribe está mintiendo de manera fea y descarada.

Yo creo que Colombia merece un mejor presidente, uno que sea digno. Lo merece porque ese es un pueblo digno. Yo amo Colombia; ¡qué viva el pueblo colombiano! Ante la mentira, la falta de respeto, el cinismo y la falta de respeto, estoy obligado a decir la verdad.

Allá él si quiere romper relaciones, ¡yo no las voy a romper! ¡Qué triste que haya un presidente mentiroso y que no de la carajo. El Ministro de la Defensa me acusó de terrorista. Ellos son Santader, que mandaron a matar a Bolívar. El santaderismo está dentro de Nariño y de verdad indigna tanto cinismo, sobre todo un cinismo hecho gobierno.

Para mí hasta la vida va en juego. Imagínense ustedes, yo en una montaña de Colombia, cuando allí andan los gringos. Y sin embargo, yo tan pronto se presentó la oportunidad, estaba listo. Le dije a Uribe, esto va a ser difícil, vamos a estar sujetos a muchas dificultades, va a haber francotiradores tratando de sabotear esto. Seguramente saldrán noticias y hechos que pudieran poner en peligro el proceso de mediación. Quiero que hagamos un acuerdo -le dije- quiero que haya transparencia entre los equipos y le propuse, antes de que cualquier cosa que ocurra que pueda poner en riesgo este proceso, nos llamamos por teléfono. Llámame porque me vengo directo o mando a alguien o hablamos por teléfono.

Este es un tema muy delicado. Uribe rompió con ese compromiso. Ellos esgrimen una razón. A mí que lo que he hecho es tratado de ayudar con transparencia. Esperaba que hubiera un contacto para rectificar o aclarar. Y lo que único que hubo fue un comunicado lleno de mentiras. Tomaron un contacto telefónico fortuito, no buscado por mí. Si el presidente Uribe hubiera cumplido con su palabra, ante el chisme; porque estoy seguro de que él (Uribe) no quería seguir en el proceso. Lo presionan mucho la oligarquía y los militares colombianos que no quieren la paz.

Él decidió darle un escupitazo a la verdad y dignidad y una patada a lo que veníamos trabajando con tanto amor. Lo lamento por los familiares y con las relaciones con Colombia. Yo que soy un hombre transparente, vertical y con dignidad y vergüenza y no puedo permitir esa falta de respeto y ese silencio, cinismo, mandar a otras personas que digan cosas. Y sacar un comunicado lleno de mentiras.

Espero que vengan mejores tiempos. Todo lo que he dicho hoy implica ponernos en alerta, sé que es grave, pero tenía que decirlo. Las relaciones con Colombia, comerciales, las empresas que tenían acá y las que tenemos allá. Todo eso se va a perjudicar. Hasta que el rey de España no se disculpe congelo las relaciones con España, porque aquí hay dignidad. Ustedes me pusieron a mi aquí, y así soy yo y estoy seguro de que represento a la mayoría de los venezolanos y además tengo la impresión de que represento a la mayoría de los colombianos que quieren paz. Ese pueblo tan agobiado”.
