    on cnn, people fleeing (or trying to flee) New Orleans are constantly referred to as “refugees”.

    it bothered me when i heard “refugee” being used over and over again on cnn… as if the (90% black and poor) people seeking shelter were not americans seeking shelter in america (and thus evacuees).

    when Flaherty refers to “refugee camps”, i suppose this is meant to conjure up images of how terrible the conditions are. but he doesn’t refer to the evacuees as refugees. i’m sure it was a conscious choice on his part but i’m not sure i understand.

  2. I’m worried that the US
    I’m worried that the US goverment is refusing to call people from New Orleans “refugees” because there is international law and standards that must be applied to “refugees”, unlike the term “survivours” which I’ve heard US goverment officals call folks who have been displaced from NOLA.
