Congo War…

George Monbiot has an important article – it seems the horrific Congo War has restarted, with Rwanda re-invading the Congo and ending the fragile peace process.

I wrote a background piece on the Congo conflict some time ago — ZNet Africa Watch has a number of good pieces.

The Congo war is the deadliest war in the world. If the world was not utterly upside down it would be extremely high on everyone’s priority list on those grounds.

  1. Suggestions for a modern
    Suggestions for a modern Candide?

Pangloss vows to bring freedom and democracy to the unfortunate in this best of all possible worlds. Immediately thereafter,
Candide has his job outsourced to a faraway country. He is unemployed and forced to move on by the authorities.

His lover Cunegonde is ‘discovered’ and appears in Hollywood films before being killed in a devastating earthquake.

Candide and Pangloss are detained as ‘illegals’ and sent to a prison in yet another faraway country. Cunegonde, returned to life, is now serving as a prison guard.

It could go on quite a while from there. Frankly I feel that the musical that most closely resembles the current situation is the Gershwin/Kaufman musical STRIKE UP THE BAND. Except this time around, it isn’t funny.
