This book is the distilled strategic thinking of three activists – one, Michael Albert, whose main activism was in the 1960s but who has been active since; and David Marty and Jessica Azulay who are younger and who worked through the 1990s and 2000s. The book takes the experiences and abstracts them to try to find insights – about how to make decisions in groups, how to choose tactics, how to use theory, how to evaluate actions. It is useful as much for the logical method of thinking through these problems as it is for the particular insights. In that sense I might have liked a bit more in the way of specific examples and how these insights apply in real activist situations, but I suspect the authors think that would make the insights less generalizable.
If you are a leftist activist looking for some clear strategic thinking, this will be a helpful book for you.
